Kuvasz - Breed History

Kuvasz Dogs are ancient dogs. The breed is considered to be of a Hungarian origin. Some claim that the Kuvasz has its roots in Tibetan giant dogs. In all probability, the Kuvasz breed came from Tibet to Hungary by way of Turkey. In the 15th century, the Kuvasz was highly esteemed. It is certain that the Kuvasz is descended from Asian sheepdogs.

Kuvasz Dogs were once used for hunting big game. However, they are more skilled to guard flocks. Later in its history, the Kuvasz was used to guard estates. The Kuvasz is not very common in other countries other than Hungary.

Kuvasz - Training

Kuvasz Dogs are somewhat stubborn. Therefore, they need a trainer who is more stubborn and determined than their pets. The Kuvasz is a willing worker. However, you need to find out what motivates it best. Remember that Kuvasz Dogs are extremely smart and can invent how to neutralize or modify the undesirable training methods that you use. Treats, praise, discipline, consistency and patience can be called the key to successful training. However, each Kuvasz is an individual. What works best with one Kuvasz can be unsuitable with other Kuvasz Dogs. The Kuvasz is used as a guard dog, police dog and a wonderful family pet. Socialization with Kuvasz Dogs should be a lifetime process.
